Alicia
Alicia Shearill has been an educator for 17 years. For 11 of those years she has been a classroom teacher. Mrs. Shearill feels that her biggest challenge in the classroom is teaching literacy skills. For many African American students English is a second language. In addition, she believes that teachers today are not taught how to teach reading (and writing) effectively in teacher training programs. If a student who has no learning challenges is not thriving academically most of the time they have not received effective reading instruction. Mrs. Shearill believes that an effective classroom teacher is an effective reading teacher.
